Symptoms

A close up of the crack, it runs about 3 inches long. After the car has been running, you can see fluid sweating out the crack.

I noticed some white smoke coming out the front of my hood one day. It was a small amount and it was raining at the time so I wasn't sure if it was water or not. I experienced leaking radiator fluid when I had the timing belt replaced at the local dealer. I recognized more condensed white smoke than water vapor. I inspected the radiator and found a crack on the upper plastic.

Drain Plug

Sep 18th 2015

Prepare a bucket and some towels in preparation to remove the drain plug. The coolant unfortunately poured right onto the subframe and it spreads in a few directions. Have a few towels kicking around so that you can respond quickly.

Drain plug on passenger's side of the radiator. My headers take more room than the stock ones and it was almost impossible to reach from the bottom. I ran my arm down the side from the top (which is where the camera is pointing).

I disconnected the hose at this end. The clamp was much easier to loosen than the one on the other end.

Remove the fans from the old radiator and install them on the new one. There are 5x 10mm bolts holding the fans in along the top.

I ignored the automatic transmission cooler lines on my manual WRX.

Transfer the reserve line as well.

I purchased 5 litres of and mixed with 1 litre of water. I filled slowly through the neck, softly burping the line. After about 4 1/2 litres I started the car for about 10 seconds, continued filling about another 1/2 litre. I repeated this a couple times while continuing to burp the lines until there was no coolant left.
